Life 05

This month has been very exciting and full.

My writing lessons started at the beginning of June. They're better than I could've ever imagined. I am learning about characters, and plots, and story structure. The best part of this is that by the end of the summer I will have a short story that's ready for publication!!  I am having fun and am excited to have a story in my hands. When it's done, it will be the first creative writing project I've finished since my high school.

When I'm not writing, I'm still dancing. The company filmed one of our repertoire pieces last week. We all worked really hard and had so much fun to remounting this piece we did about 3 years ago. There were some changes to the cast, however we did our best to keep the piece the same. I feel very proud after the week this week of all the work the company has done and how we all rose to the challenges that seem to always come up in process. 

Also, on the work front, there are two more works-in progress we are pleased to add to the repertoire.  My boss has created a piece with some community dancers and my colleague Rob has done an enormous amount of research and has rediscovered his Wendate Huron heritage. Both pieces were woven together with so much thought and love and as I sat in the audience for the first time in about 10 year, I felt an enormous surge of pride not only in these two choreographers, who have become so dear to me over the last 10 years, but in being a part of this remarkable group, and not just the company, but the organization at large.  It truly is a wonderful place to work and the love and support we all have for each other was tangible.  

 Summer is here and though it will be a time of rest for me from work, I'm still planning to keep busy with lots of new and wonderful projects and activities as God directs. I can't wait to update you on these next month!!

A solo adventure part 3

My solo at the beginning of Flesh and Spokes Show time!!!!  Our call to the theater on Saturday was for 3:00.We made this call in plenty of time and were able to relax a bit before I was needed. After my rehearsal and notes it was snack time followed by make up and costumes. At rehearsal the previous day, it hadn't taken me long to adapt to the stage, but the wings were a problem for me. Every theater has different wings but in all the eight years I've been dancing professionally I have never seen wings like these. They were shallow and wide. The booms for the lights were in each wing making it cramped and scary (each boom held 2 or 3 lights and each light got very, very hot. Not to mention the lights are very expensive.) The set up was such that turning around in the  wing and remaining hidden would be impossible. This meant that for each of my 3 exits, I would have to go off backwards. Challenge that produses trust

For the last many months, I  have been mourning the loss of my PSW (personal support worker.) When someone works closely with you day after day, it is hard not to become friends. We share stories and life.   O ver the year she was caring for me I grew to trust her . But here's the thing, she was one of many workers over the last four years who has left after a short period of time. And like with the others, I asked God a very simple question "Why?"  why just as trust and friendship develops, do they leave to go on to other jobs, studies or careers? Through this and many other losses, God is teaching me that change is good, and to trust Him in it all.  Does it still hurt? Of course it does. Do I miss her? Absolutely. But I am slowly learning to see everything God choreographs into my life as good. It doesn't always feel that way. Why "Choreographer's Cuisine?"

Why dance?  Dance is everywhere in Scripture. In Psalms 150 it tells us to "...Praise Him with harp and lyre. Praise Him with timbrel and dancing..." For me dance has always been a very important part of life. I believe dance was engrained into my very being by my grandfather, who, I'm told danced me for hours around the living room when I was a baby trying to get me to sleep. (I'm told I was a hard baby to get to sleep!) As I have gotten older dance has inspired me and has become a way of expression when I can't find the words. I have also tried other art forms, but dance and poetry are my two favourites. As I am learning the art of choreography this year from my bosses, I am recognizing that my life has been choreographed by the Great Choreographer, Jesus Christ.
